Golden Frog – A Lost Treasure

This amphibian is the national symbol of Panama and is considered a symbol of good fortune by the people. Originally found in the rain forest streams of west-central Panama, these small frogs have developed a form of sign language, called semaphore, to communicate by waving their “hands” at one another.

Currently listed as a critically endangered species but thought to be extinct in the wild – the Panamanian Golden Frog is threatened by the chytrid fungus, habitat loss and the over-collecting for the pet trade.
